10TV: Chinese Delegation Visits OhioHealth Bing Cancer Center

Recently, the OhioHealth Bing Cancer Center welcomed a group of international visitors. A delegation from Shenzhen, China spent the day learning about breast cancer care at OhioHealth.

The group is called “Pink Ribbon” and consists of social workers and breast cancer survivors who are vising the US to observe structure of support services for those living with breast cancer. Prior to coming to Columbus, the group spent time at a hospital in Chicago.

While at the Bing Cancer Center, the group toured the breast center (including the mammography and ultrasound areas) and learned about a variety of ways OhioHealth cares for breast cancer patients. This included learning about breast reconstruction tattoos, integrative medicine (such as massage, acupuncture and nutrition counseling), genetics and research. They capped off their day with a visit to the Over My Head Boutique.

One member of the delegation mentioned it was interesting to see acupuncture, a long-time eastern medicine technique, used in combination with western medicine here in the United States.

The Pink Ribbon association, based in Shenzhen, China, is a non-governmental organization that educates and advocates for those living with breast cancer. As in many areas of social services, this sector of the Chinese support system is in its infancy, and the hope of this program is to provide ideas and insights to be incorporated in Shenzhen. Additionally, they hope to connect families from China with families in central Ohio that are also coping with the effects of breast cancer.

The group’s visit to Columbus was sponsored Columbus International Program (CIP), a non-profit group. For over 42 years CIP has provided opportunities for international professionals from around the world to gain valuable

insight and experience through professional exchange programs throughout central Ohio. In this time they have hosted over 1,100 professionals from 112 different countries. They are the only organization that provides and supports International Professionals in Residence.

10TV visited the Bing Cancer Center for a portion of the group's visit.  You can watch the story above.
