Leapfrog gives high marks in Patient Safety to eight OhioHealth hospitals

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Eight OhioHealth member hospitals were recently honored for their dedication to patient safety by being recognized in the Spring 2015 Hospital Safety Scores from The Leapfrog Group, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from preventable medical errors, injuries and infections within the hospital.

More than 2,500 U.S. general hospitals were assigned scores in April 2015 with about 31 percent receiving an A grade.

An “A” grade was given to six OhioHealth hospitals:

  • OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital
  • OhioHealth Grant Medical Center
  • OhioHealth Doctors Hospital
  • OhioHealth Grady Memorial Hospital
  • OhioHealth Dublin Methodist Hospital
  • OhioHealth Marion General Hospital

Additionally, two of our newest member hospitals received a “B” grade and are steadily moving toward an “A.” Hospitals receiving a “B” grade are:

  • OhioHealth MedCentral Mansfield Hospital
  • OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital, Athens, Ohio

Developed under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce an A, B, C, D, or F score. The score represents a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm.

The Leapfrog score is the first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety. It is designed to give consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay and is free to the public.

“I am very proud of our hospitals for achieving this award again,” said Bruce Vanderhoff, MD, Chief Medical Officer for OhioHealth. “It is a clear indication of the vigilance, determination and commitment we’ve made at OhioHealth to ensure that our patients are cared for with the utmost safety and compassion every day.”

More than 2,500 U.S. general hospitals were assigned scores in April 2015, with about 31-percent receiving an A grade. The Hospital Safety Score is fully transparent, offering a full analysis of the data and methodology used in determining grades on the website. Now, for the first time, patients can also review their hospital’s past safety performance alongside its current grade on the Hospital Safety Score site, allowing them to determine which local hospitals have the best track record in patient safety and which have demonstrated consistent improvement.
