Here’s a really good reason why guys in particular need to get a good night’s sleep.

A new study finds men who get too little or too much shuteye are at increased risk of developing diabetes. Researchers looked at sleep duration and glucose metabolism in nearly 800 healthy people. Male participants who slept the least and the most were more likely to have an impaired ability to process sugar… They had higher blood sugar levels than those who got an average amount of sleep, about 7 hours. On the other hand, women who slept less or more than average were more responsive to the hormone insulin.

The senior author says, “Even when you are healthy, sleeping too much or too little can have detrimental effects on your health.” She says these findings show how important sleep is when it comes to how your body handles glucose.

I’m Dr. Cindy Haines of HealthDay TV… with news from today that can lead to healthy tomorrows.
