Mansfield Hospital's 'Hope Chest' Provides Care Beyond Medicine for Oncology Patients
OhioHealth is excited to announce the opening of the ‘Hope Chest’ at the OhioHealth Physician Group's Radiation Oncology Building, located at 330 Glessner Avenue in Mansfield.
The ‘Hope Chest’ is a dedicated pantry for oncology patients, filled with basic items like food, personal care products, and clothing.
“This pantry is more than a room with shelves and supplies,” said Business Project Manager for Oncology Services at Mansfield Hospital and OhioHealth Shelby Hospital, Elisa Bryant. “It's a symbol of compassion, dignity, and hope for our oncology patients who are facing not only the challenges of cancer, but also the heavy burden of financial toxicity that cancer treatment can bring.”
Bryant says the idea for the pantry started with long time oncology social worker Michele Schaefer. She noticed the needs of patients went far beyond just medicine, so she started filling a cardboard box underneath her desk with the basics. That simple act of kindness turned into the ‘Hope Chest’.
“This is just another way that we at OhioHealth can make sure that we're addressing all of the needs of the patient,” said Bryant.
Within the Hope Chest, patients can find pick cards, which lists common symptoms while undergoing cancer treatment, and items that may provide relief.
Other pricier items, like mouthwash specifically for dry mouth, are available for the more unique side effects. There are plenty of products for patients in need, but the message is deeper.
“This is not just about products, it's about restoring stability and hope during moments when patients often feel the most vulnerable,” said Bryant.
With the help of the OhioHealth Foundation and donations from the community, OhioHealth looks forward to keeping the hope chest available for years to come.
If you'd like to donate to the Hope Chest, the pantry is accepting new clothing, non-perishable food items, and personal care products. According to Bryant, you can drop off donations at the Radiation Oncology building across from Mansfield Hospital.
