Medical Minute: OhioHealth Hospice House

Honoring your loved one in their last moments is a special gift that is handled intentionally with OhioHealth Hospice. Hospice is intended to support patients and their family in the final six months of a patient’s life. Deciding where someone wants to receive care is often a big decision for families, so Michelle Stulgis, PT, DPT, Director of OhioHealth Hospice, recommends having a conversation prior to being in this stage of life. This gives patients the chance to receive the type of care they want in the space that they feel most comfortable in.  

The OhioHealth Hospice House provides a welcoming treatment experience that feels like home. With private rooms, community spaces, outdoor trails, gardens, educational programs and grief therapies, the house was designed to provide comfort in the last few months of a patient’s life.  

“We’re really trying to meet that patient and family where they are. We want to come alongside them for that entire journey,” Stulgis said. “We’re able to use that support from our donors to help with those things, like final wishes, whether that’s a meal that they want with their loved ones or that’s a special experience that they want. That all makes it possible for us to continue to support that patient and family where they are during those last weeks of life.” 

Hospice care is an option for families when home care isn’t enough, and specialized support is needed in a peaceful atmosphere.
