OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital medical physicist Peter Sandwall, PhD, has been named a Fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), one of the organization’s highest honors. The national fellowship designation recognizes Sandwall’s outstanding contributions to medical physics through radiation oncology clinical service, education, research and global health work.
The AAPM Fellow designation is a peer-reviewed honor awarded to members who demonstrate exceptional achievement across multiple areas of the medical physics profession. Sandwall, the sole medical physicist at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital, earned the recognition for contributions spanning nearly two decades, including clinical excellence, global cancer care initiatives and extensive educational programs for healthcare professionals.
In his role at Mansfield Hospital, where he has served for nine years, Dr. Sandwall helps ensure radiation therapy equipment operates safely and accurately. He works closely with physicians and clinical teams to direct radiation treatment precisely to its intended target, minimize toxicity and protect both patients and associates.
Dr. Sandwall earned his bachelor's degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College, and his master's degree and PhD from the University of Cincinnati.
Beyond his clinical work in Mansfield, Dr. Sandwall has dedicated himself to medical physics education and improving access to cancer care. He teaches physics at North Central State College and has conducted extensive online training for physicists, physicians and technologists around the world with the nonprofit Rayos Contra Cancer. He serves as a trustee of the nonprofit Radiating Hope and has supported cancer treatment centers in Honduras and other Latin American countries for the past 15 years. His contributions include training clinical associates on radiation planning systems and helping transfer radiation therapy equipment to underserved regions.
