A Legacy of Compassion: Honoring Marvin and Shirley Philpott at OhioHealth Grady Memorial Hospital

It started with a simple act of care, a neck pillow brought to comfort a loved one in the hospital. That small gesture grew into much more. On Oct. 28, 2025, OhioHealth Grady Memorial Hospital came together to celebrate Marvin and Shirley Philpott, whose devotion to the community has inspired countless hearts.
On that day, the OhioHealth Foundation and Grady Memorial held a donor recognition ceremony to celebrate Marvin Philpott, his son John Philpott, daughter Shanna Heilveil, and Shirleys daughter Cynthia Dale who was unable to attend, for their generosity and kindness. Marvin and his family donated neck pillows for patients in honor of Marvin’s wife, Shirley, who passed away on May 9, 2025.
“It was a very wonderful day, don’t know how I can express appreciation for it,” Marvin said. “Got to share it with my family, that’s a big thing.”
Marvin and Shirley are familiar and beloved faces at Grady Memorial. For years, they devoted their time, energy, and love as volunteers, making everyone feel seen, cared for, and at home. Marvin began volunteering at Grady Memorial in 2007, and Shirley in 2004.
“Being able to help others is what I loved the most, that was the main thing,” Marvin said.
Together, they contributed thousands of volunteer hours. Marvin gave over 4,500 hours, pushing the comfort cart with drinks and snacks for visitors and patients, dressing up for holidays, assisting in the Grady Parker Library, and even photographing volunteer events. Shirley contributed over 6,200 hours, assisting with clerical tasks, tracking volunteer service hours, creating programs for events, including the annual volunteer recognition celebration, and supporting the volunteer services office in every way imaginable.
“Marvin and Shirley both gave of their time freely to volunteering, always with a warm comforting smile,” said Vickie Rogers, manager of hospitality concierge services at OhioHealth Grady Memorial Hospital and OhioHealth Dublin Methodist Hospital. “Both had infectious laughter that would spread very quickly when talking with each of them.”
Rogers added that Marvin and Shirley took pride in every task, showing reliability and commitment to the Grady Memorial family and community.
In April 2025 Shirley became a patient at OhioHealth, where Marvin’s thoughtfulness showed up in small, but meaningful ways.
“The reason for the neck pillow is when she was at the hospital, her neck was propped up by a towel and it wouldn’t keep her head where she wanted it,” Marvin said. “When I got home one day, I said there’s a neck pillow she used at home. I’m taking it down there when I go there tomorrow.”
That simple gesture spoke volumes about Marvin’s love and care. After Shirley’s passing, Marvin wanted to ensure other patients could experience the same comfort. His donation of neck pillows in Shirley’s memory has brought warmth and solace to countless patients and families.
“I was not surprised, I’m not surprised with the scholarship either,” John said of his father’s generosity. “That’s just who they are.”
The ceremony also celebrated the birthdays of both Marvin and John, who share the same day.
“This has been a really wonderful ceremony and celebration, to be here to share this gift with him in honor of Shirley, I’m really glad I could be here and share it with everyone,” Shanna said.
“This is absolutely awesome, like my sister just said, they’ve been volunteering over 40 years, Marvin’s been doing it since I was a kid in grade school and just to see what it means for other people, to reap the benefits of their volunteerism is just fantastic,” John said. “Hearing it is one thing, but actually seeing it in action, you don’t really recognize how much it was appreciated until you get to something like this.”
Marvin’s generosity extended beyond neck pillows. He also made an additional gift to start a nursing scholarship, supporting the next generation of compassionate caregivers who continue the mission he and Shirley held close.
“It’s them leaving a legacy and hopefully people will see that and follow in their footsteps, you know I’ve done my own volunteering because of their example, both parents, but they really were great volunteers,” Shanna said.
Marvin and Shirley would have celebrated 43 years of marriage. Shirley is remembered as compassionate, honest, caring, a confidante, and a friend. “There’s not enough words,” family and friends said.
Through their volunteerism, thoughtful gestures, and enduring love, Marvin and Shirley Philpott leave a lasting impact at OhioHealth Grady Memorial Hospital, a legacy of kindness and dedication that will continue to inspire all who follow in their footsteps.
