From Kitchens to Care: How Kitchen Kapers is Helping to Fight Cancer
For more than three decades, Kitchen Kapers has helped to raise over $1.1 million to support cancer services throughout OhioHealth. This volunteer organization offers annual tours of luxury and remodeled kitchens in Upper Arlington with a strong mission to improve the lives of people battling cancer through integrative support.
Deepa Halaharvi, DO, OhioHealth breast surgeon and breast cancer survivor, told NBC4 reporter Cierra Johnson that treatment is truly multifaceted. She said that different aspects of care can go into integrated medicine, such as art therapy, acupuncture, massage therapy, cold capping and support groups.
While many of these therapy options can significantly improve quality of life for patients, they are often not covered by insurance. Kitchen Kapers makes these treatment options possible for those who can’t afford it.
The program was recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts as a “Best Practice” because of its unique integration of artistry in cancer treatment. The program aims to improve the physical and physiological state of patients. The success of Kitchen Kapers is not only measured in donations, but by the thousands of cancer patients who have gotten assistance to ease their pain during such a challenging time.
This year’s tour featured six kitchens for guests to enjoy, featuring a range of beautiful architecture and designs, while supporting a valuable cause. “While it takes hours of coordination to make it all happen, it’s worth knowing so far $1 million have been raised by these tours, and this year another $100,000 will go to the cause,” said Lindsey Miller, 2025 Kitchen Kapers President.
While touring kitchens may not feel directly connected to cancer care, this program shows the power of community and holistic care. Each year, volunteers and members of the community come together to support cancer patients, showing that generosity can have a huge impact, even after the tours have ended.
