Joan Lunden is United in the Fight Against Cancer

On Saturday, June 11, OhioHealth presented “United in the Fight Against Cancer: a Community and Clinical Conference” at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. 560 patients, survivors, families, caregivers and clinicians were on hand to attend this first-of-its-kind event.

The conference offered not only the latest in cancer research and treatment from expert physicians, but also support and hope for those whose lives have been touched by this disease. Patients and survivors had the opportunity to connect with others who are on the same journey and share in a morning of support and empowerment. They were able to attend their choice of two informative sessions, including:

  • Finding your new normal
  • Symptom management
  • Long-term care planning
  • Relationships and intimacy

Family members, caregivers and friends found helpful resources on what to expect if a loved one is fighting cancer. Topics included:

  • Peer and emotional support
  • Stress management/Making time for yourself

There were also sessions on cancer prevention and screening; genetics; and wellness and nutrition. In addition to these topics, participants had the opportunity to attend a cancer expo and view interactive demonstrations.

Keynote speaker, Joan Lunden, former Good Morning America co-host, breast cancer survivor and advocate, moved the crowd to its feet with her message of hope, healing and healthy living. After her address, she spent some time talking with OhioHealth about her journey through breast cancer and shared her advice for patients and physicians. You can watch that video above.

NBC4 anchor and medical reporter, Ellie Merritt, served as the emcee for the event. She also had the opportunity to interview Joan Lunden. You can watch NBC4’s recap of the day below.
