Mansfield Hospital Reaches 100 Placenta Donations
OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital is proud to announce its 100th placenta donation through Lifeline of Ohio’s Placenta Donation Program. The milestone means more than 2,500 healing grafts have been created to help patients in need. The hospital launched its program on September 19, 2023.
Each donated placenta, which would typically be discarded, has the potential to create approximately 25 healing grafts. These grafts are used for a wide range of procedures involving eye, oral and spine surgery, and for the treatment of difficult-to-heal wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, pressure ulcers and burns.
“We’re proud to partner with Lifeline of Ohio to be able to empower our patients to give the gift of healing to others while bringing new life into the world,” said Nicki Scott MSN RN, Director of Nursing at Mansfield Hospital. “Thanks to our participants, we’ve been able to help heal potentially thousands of people with unique medical needs. We look forward to the continued success of this program.”
Lifeline of Ohio’s Placenta Donation program allows expectant mothers with scheduled C-section deliveries to donate the placenta, umbilical cord and amniotic membrane.
Program Highlights
· Any expectant mother, of any age, with a planned C-section can be a potential donor.
· Placenta donation does not change any part of the delivery.
· There is no cost associated with placenta donation.
· Placenta donation is not related to cord blood donation.
The Lifeline of Ohio Placenta Donation Program was launched in 2019 and has grown to include 28 hospitals and more than 100 OB/GYN offices throughout central and southeast Ohio, as well as Wood and Hancock counties in West Virginia.
