Mansfield Hospital Unveils 'Wall of Heroes'

The hallway leading to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital's Critical Care Unit looks different today.

The changes made are somewhat simple: new paint, signage, and pictures, but what the hallway represents means everything.

“May this wall remind us every day of a quiet heroism that lives on in the walls of this hospital,” said Erin Stine, senior advisor of philanthropy for the OhioHealth Foundation.

The hospital unveiled a memorial wall Wednesday, honoring patients who have given the gift of life. Every patient on the wall has donated either an organ or tissue. 

The wall of heroes currently features eight donors, with room for many more, allowing family members to stop by and see their loved ones honored. One of the donors featured on the wall is Steven Beasley. His widow, Milly, was able to see the memorial wall for the first time last week. 

“It's beautiful,” said Milly Beasley.

While Steven wasn't able to donate his organs, she takes comfort knowing he gave someone the gift of sight.

“For him to be able to honor somebody, with him not having good sight, to give someone good sight, we just thought that was a great honor,” said Beasley. “So we just decided to go ahead and do it.”

Beasley was one of several family members present for the emotional ceremony to unveil the memorial wall.

While more than 100,000 people are still waiting for a life-saving transplant in the U.S., these families take pride knowing Mansfield Hospital is recognizing their loved ones for saying “yes” to being a donor.
