New Radiation Oncologist Helps To Provide Cutting-Edge Cancer Treatments at Mansfield Hospital

A new radiation oncologist at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital is helping to make advanced cancer treatments more accessible to the community. Shaakir Hasan, DO, joins Michael Siedow, MD, to provide some of the latest and greatest radiation oncology treatments at Mansfield Hospital. He comes from the New York Proton Center, where he was also an assistant professor at the Einstein School of Medicine.

During his time at the New York Proton Center, he worked with oncologic experts at Memorial Sloan Kettering, Mount Sinai, and Montefiore, some of the world’s most respected cancer centers. “We conducted innovative trials there and used cutting-edge treatments, many of which we are already implementing at Mansfield Hospital and the surrounding area,” said Dr. Hasan. One of those treatments includes Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy. It’s a precise, innovative radiation therapy technique that can deliver a higher dose of radiation per treatment session. This allows the treatment to be completed in a considerably shorter timeframe compared to standard radiation therapy. While this is already being offered at Mansfield Hospital, Dr. Hasan’s expertise will allow more patients the opportunity to receive it.

While Dr. Hasan has vast clinical experience, he leans on his partner, Michael Siedow, MD, and other oncologists at OhioHealth for advice and expertise on some of his cases. In fact, they meet every day for an hour to discuss current cases and any new development in the oncology field. “One of the reasons I came to OhioHealth is because they offer many of the same cutting-edge treatments that were developed at leading cancer institutions,” said Dr. Hasan. “I’ve never seen this level of collaboration on so many cases, at so many levels of care. It’s as if every patient gets five consults in one.”
