New Year's Resolution Reset - How to Get Back on Track

As the calendar page flips to another year, The Wellness Conversation listeners are wondering what they need to know about setting achievable goals for 2025.

Marcus Thorpe and Lindsey Gordon had a unique conversation with Psychiatrist Brittany Tidwell, DO and Family Medicine Doctor Jason Diehl, MD on this week’s podcast episode surrounding this all-encompassing topic.

Often time’s people want to go from zero to 100 on Jan. 1, with no idea how to reach the goals they are setting for themselves. When asked the best way to begin exercising, Dr. Diehl said, “The best answer is slow and steady. Weight loss and fitness don’t happen overnight. You need to just try and be a little bit better every day and improve.”

Mental health and physical wellness go hand in hand, but all too frequently people don’t realize they need a therapist’s help until life gets in the way.

“I always encourage people, whether it’s Jan. 1 or July 2, I don’t care. I want you to have someone that you can lean on, because that is something people look for when things are tough,” said Dr. Tidwell. “It’s much easier to have a foundation before things get rough in life.”

As the episode wrapped up, both doctors shared what it's like seeing people reach the goals they set for themselves.

“When someone wants to run a 5K, half marathon, or even a marathon and they finally hit that, and get to put it on their social media feed,” said Dr. Diehl. “It brings them a lot of pride and hopefully energizes them to sign up for the next event.”

Dr. Tidwell emphasized how much pride can be seen when people reach even the smaller goals, they set for themselves.

“We’re sharing in this joy of marching forward. We’re getting somewhere and it is just so fun,” she said.
