OhioHealth Hosts Inaugural Walk/Run Event for Cancer Survivors
Early Saturday morning, the OhioHealth McConnell Heart Health Center buzzed with energy as over 250 participants gathered for the first OhioHealth Survivorship Walk & Run. The event, held on July 20, aimed to honor cancer survivors and their supporters and give them a way to Keep Making Plans together.
Attendees included doctors, caregivers, survivors and advocates, all lacing up their shoes to walk or run in solidarity. The event featured a one-mile walk/run along with talks from physician and survivor speakers.
Bushra Siddiqi, MD, medical director of the OhioHealth High Risk Cancer Clinic, offered crucial information for those who may be at high risk of a cancer diagnosis due to a variety of factors. Cassandra Grenade, MD, OhioHealth medical oncologist, highlighted the support services offered by OhioHealth and Tara Ernske, RN, OhioHealth breast cancer practice manager and breast cancer survivor, provided a patient viewpoint, reflecting on both her personal and professional journey.
Emily Leverett, OhioHealth practice manager and leader of the OhioHealth Cancer Walk/Run Club, talked about the Walk/Run Club and shared how those in attendance could register to join. Events like these remind participants that they are not alone after facing cancer.
The OhioHealth Survivorship Walk/Run “is bringing together people who have been treated for various types of cancer who are all here for one goal which is to celebrate health and wellness as well as support each other and their family members and friends," Leverett told ABC6.
The event also included community vendors providing resources and information for cancer survivors. OhioHealth plans to expand this event in future, aiming for an even larger gathering next year.
