OhioHealth Integrative Medicine

Cancer treatments can bring side effects like pain, nausea and fatigue. However, there is a form of supplemental treatment that helps patients to heal through relaxation of the mind and body; this is integrative medicine.

OhioHealth offers integrative care, a physician-directed program based upon the latest research and focuses on healing the whole person. This area of medicine draws on the fields of nutrition, stress management, physical fitness, massage therapy and acupuncture.

Matt Everett, DO, medical director of Integrative Care at the OhioHealth Arthur G.H. Bing Cancer Center, said, “Integrative Medicine is not a replacement for traditional chemotherapy, surgery, oncological treatments in the traditional sense, but it is something to help enhance those treatments and help the patient to do better.”

Several OhioHealth facilities offer cancer patients integrative care options through exercise, nutrition, cancer rehabilitation, mind and body therapies and more. You can view a list of Integrative Care Services offered throughout various OhioHealth locations by clicking on the PDF link under "downloads" on the right side of the page.

Yvonne Woodson, RN, L.AC, at the Bing Cancer Center, finds that all of these treatment enhancements are a successful mixture of Western and Eastern medicine. “Western medicine is fabulous at killing things and cutting things out, Eastern medicine has over thousands of years developed ways to really support people going through all sorts of things,” she said.

Susan Hovest, a breast cancer survivor and Bing Cancer Center patient, supplemented her chemotherapy and radiation treatments with integrative care, which has lifted her spirits and way of life. “You only have two choices you either believe it’s going to work and believe you’re going to OK and have a positive attitude or you’re not, and I would much rather live this way,” Hovest said.
