“Lung cancer screening has rewritten the book on lung cancer survivability,” said Joel Provenzano, MD, pulmonary and critical care specialist at OhioHealth Marion General Hospital. “The earlier lung cancer is found, the better the chances of treating it successfully."

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death among men and women. Screening is recommended for adults ages 50 to 80 who currently smoke or formerly smoked and have a smoking history of at least 20 pack-years. A pack-year is the equivalent of smoking one pack of cigarettes daily for one year.

“Screening can help detect lung cancer before symptoms appear,” said Abhishake Kaapuraala, MD, family medicine hospitalist at OhioHealth Primary and Walk-In Care Kenton. "If you qualify, I encourage you to get screened. It’s a simple test that could make a big difference."

A physician’s order is required. Individuals who need help obtaining an order can contact their preferred screening location for assistance. Lung cancer screenings are covered by most insurance plans and Medicare.

Appointments are required, and registration closes Saturday, Oct. 31.
