OhioHealth named one of the top five Large Health Systems in America
COLUMBUS, Ohio — OhioHealth announced today that it has been recognized by Truven Health Analytics as one of the 15 Top Health Systems in America, and one of the top five in the “Large Health System” category.
OhioHealth is the only health system in the nation to be named to this list six times since the study was created seven years ago.
“Being named one of the top 15 systems in the nation as consistently as we have illustrates our unwavering dedication to delivering high-quality healthcare to the patients we serve every day,” said Bruce Vanderhoff, MD, chief medical officer for OhioHealth. “Earning this recognition means that we, as a system, have achieved a level of care and a culture of excellence that increases value to our patients and our community.”
Truven’s process and methodology…To select the top 15 health systems, Truven Health Analytics analyzed data from 341 health systems and nearly 2,900 member hospitals to identify those that achieved superior performance based on a composite score of nine measures of care quality, patient perception of care, episode-of-illness cost and operational efficiency. To determine this year’s winners, researchers analyzed public information including:
- Medicare cost reports
- Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MEDPAR) data
- Core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Hospital Compare website
The 15 top systems saved more lives, made fewer patient safety errors and discharged patients sooner with better long-term outcomes. Beyond excelling in clinical quality, the top 15 systems also provided patients with a better overall experience. Other findings include:
- Lower Cost per Episode: The winning 15 Top Health Systems spent 7 percent less per care episode than non-winning peer systems.
- Better Survival Rates: The winning systems also experienced 1.2 percent fewer deaths than non-winning peer systems.
- Fewer Complications: Patients of the winning health systems had 5 percent fewer complications than patients in other systems.
- Better Patient Safety and Core Measures Adherence: The top health systems had a 10.9 percent better patient safety performance and better adherence to core measures of care than their peers.
