OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital Earns Fourth ENERGY STAR® Certification for Energy Efficiency Excellence

OhioHealth announced that O’Bleness Hospital in Athens has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR® certification for superior energy performance, marking the fourth time the hospital has received this national recognition. The achievement underscores O’Bleness Hospital’s sustained commitment to responsible energy use and operational efficiency.

O’Bleness Hospital earned an ENERGY STAR Score of 87 on EPA’s 1–100 scale, indicating it is more energy efficient than 87 percent of comparable hospitals nationwide.

“Improving the energy efficiency of our nation’s buildings is critical to protecting our environment,” said Cindy Jacobs, chief of the ENERGY STAR Commercial & Industrial Branch. “From the boiler room to the board room, organizations are leading the way by making their buildings more efficient and earning EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification.”

ENERGY STAR–certified buildings and plants are verified to perform in the top 25 percent of facilities nationwide based on weather-normalized source energy use, which accounts for occupancy, hours of operation and other key factors. ENERGY STAR is the only U.S. energy efficiency certification grounded in actual, independently verified performance data.

“This award reflects the consistent, thoughtful work of our facilities and operations teams,” said hospital president LeeAnn Lucas-Helber. “Managing energy responsibly helps us support patient care while being mindful of our environmental impact.”

Hospital leaders credit O’Bleness Hospital’s continued ENERGY STAR success to several ongoing initiatives, including:

  • Monitoring and maintenance of unoccupied energy settings in appropriate areas

  • Installation of a new chilled water system in 2020, significantly reducing electricity consumption

  • Regular review and optimization of air handling systems, including supply air temperatures, use of outside air cooling when available, and earlier identification of performance issues

  • Ongoing focus on energy efficiency during equipment replacements and building renovation projects

On average, ENERGY STAR–certified buildings and plants use 35 percent less energy, generate 35 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions, and cost less to operate than similar facilities, without compromising comfort or performance.
