OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital Earns Top Recognition for Breastfeeding Support
OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital has been recognized by Ohio First Steps for Healthy Babies, a voluntary breastfeeding designation program that acknowledges hospitals for their commitment to promoting, protecting and supporting breastfeeding. The program, led by the Ohio Hospital Association and the Ohio Department of Health, awards a star for every two steps achieved in the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, as defined by the World Health Organization and Baby-Friendly USA.
Since the First Steps program’s inception in 2015, O’Bleness Hospital has achieved the highest recognition possible—a five-star designation—demonstrating its dedication to fostering a breastfeeding-friendly environment for new mothers and their families. The hospital has also maintained its Bag-Free Hospital Designation, which encourages maternity centers to forgo distributing free infant formula samples or formula company-branded bags, and earned the Father/Partner Engagement Designation, recognizing its efforts to actively involve fathers and partners in breastfeeding support.
“We are committed to providing new mothers and their families with the best possible start,” said Penny Williams, O’Bleness Hospital lactation consultant and women’s health educator. “When a new mother delivers here, she can be assured that hospital staff are trained and policies are in place to support her breastfeeding journey. In addition, partners are included in education and support, ensuring they play an active role in breastfeeding success.”
O’Bleness Hospital’s efforts to achieve this designation include maintaining breastfeeding-supportive policies, ensuring hospital staff receive specialized training and actively engaging partners in the breastfeeding experience. These initiatives not only provide critical support for new mothers but also contribute to better long-term health outcomes for babies, including a reduced risk of asthma, diabetes and obesity.
