The award honors health care organizations for exceptional leadership and achievement in sustainability and environmental stewardship. Recipients are selected through a nomination and review process led by hospital sustainability professionals from across the state.

“OhioHealth has demonstrated what sustainability leadership can look like when it is integrated across an organization,” said Theo Sergakis, director, strategic programs and energy & sustainability for the Ohio Hospital Association. “The Chapman Award recognizes not only measurable progress, but the collaboration and practical approaches that can help advance sustainability across Ohio’s health care community.”

That measurable progress includes an 18.1% reduction in Energy Use Intensity since OhioHealth established its Board sustainability goals. New OhioHealth hospitals also are being designed to perform in the top quartile nationally for energy efficiency.

Sustainability is increasingly built into how OhioHealth plans and builds facilities, chooses products, runs its hospitals and delivers care. The health system has eliminated food waste from its kitchens going to landfills, expanded operating room and blue wrap recycling, and incorporated sustainability into purchasing, construction and transportation.

These efforts are designed to improve operational efficiency, reduce environmental impact and strengthen resilience while supporting OhioHealth’s mission to improve the health of those it serves.

“This recognition is especially meaningful because of the depth of expertise within the Ohio Hospital Association and its Environmental Leadership Council,” said OhioHealth principal advisor of sustainability, Terri Scannell. “OHA has created a strong community where health systems can learn from one another, share what works and continue raising the bar for sustainable health care across Ohio.”

The Chapman Award reflects more than a single project. It recognizes OhioHealth’s broader commitment to making sustainability part of everyday operations and advancing practical approaches that support patient care, operational excellence and healthier communities.
