Physician's Practice Journal: Using Mobile Apps to Engage Hospitalized Patients

OhioHealth is currently running a pilot program of patients using iPads on select floors at Grant Medical Center and Riverside Methodist Hospital.  With these iPads, patients are able to communicate with their medical team, see test results and feel educated about their care through the My Chart application.  In addition to My Chart, there is also entertainment with games and movies, as well as an e-reader and news apps.

Once a patient is discharged from the hospital, the tablet is wiped back to factory settings to protect patient information and reset for the next patient.

The goal is to eventually expand the program to other floors and hospials within the OhioHealth sytem.

James Sturiano, OhioHealth mobile device deployment manager, was recently interviewed by Physician's Practice Journal and Healthcare IT News about the pilot program.
