Southeastern Medical Center Awards Record 12 Scholarships During National Nurses Week

As part of its celebration of National Nurses Week, OhioHealth Southeastern Medical Center announced the awarding of 12 scholarships to nurses and healthcare associates on Wednesday, May 6. This marks the most scholarships ever awarded at Southeastern Medical Center.

The scholarships support associates who are continuing their education while serving patients across the hospital. This year’s recipients represent a wide range of departments, roles, ages and academic goals, from associate degrees to master’s degrees.

Scholarship recipients include Matthew Bourne, Abbigale Cramer, Emma Davis, Chelsea Glasgow, Victoria Goff, Mattie Grubb, Desiree Hart, Alicia Hinson, Lily Jefferis, Katie Miser, Alicia VanFossen and Zayden Yeagle.

“This year’s scholarship class reflects the passion, commitment, and potential of our associates,” said Wendy Elliott, president of Southeastern Medical Center. “We awarded more scholarships and more funding than ever before, and that happened because of generous donors who believe in our people. These associates are investing in their future, and in the future of care in our community.”

Scholarships are provided by the OhioHealth Foundation, thanks to gifts from generous donors. The Southeast Ohio Health and Wellness Foundation Fund, which is held by the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio, provided support for six scholarships. Additional scholarships were supported through the Southeastern Medical Center Nursing Excellence Scholarship fund and a new scholarship created by the Southeastern Medical Center Medical Staff.

“We are proud to invest in the people who care for our community every day,” said Dr. Joseph O’Hanlon, president of the Medical Staff at Southeastern Medical Center. “Education strengthens our teams, expands opportunity, and helps us continue delivering high-quality care close to home. We are grateful to support our associates in a lasting way through this new endowment.”

Recipients are pursuing education in nursing, imaging, patient care, quality, and allied health fields. Their goals include becoming nurse practitioners, a midwife, a radiologic technologist, a physical therapist assistant and future healthcare leaders and educators.

“The support behind these scholarships shows what is possible when a community comes together,” Elliott said. “Our donors are helping build a stronger workforce for Southeastern Medical Center and for the patients and families who count on us.”
