"Vets Visiting Vets" Program at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital

9,000 visits later, the program has expanded to all OhioHealth hospitals

When a veteran lands in the hospital, what better visitor could there be, other than loved ones, than a fellow veteran, someone who has walked in his or her boots and who speaks their language.

Thanks to a program started at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital six years ago, that happens every day.

Started by the hospital volunteer services department six years ago, veteran volunteers ranging in age from their 30 something to 70 something, show up every day, get their list of veterans who are patients in the hospital and look forward to visiting them to share stories, explain VA benefits and just listen.

There have been more than 9,000 of these visits and it’s become so successful that the program has now been established at all OhioHealth hospitals.

WSYX reporter Rob Wells came by on Memorial Day to do a story about the program. Click on the logo below to watch.
