Will intermittent fasting help you lose weight and keep it off?

100 obese adults were assigned to one of 3 study groups for a year to investigate.

The first group followed alternate-day fasting where they cut 25 percent of their calorie needs on fast days. They then were allowed 125% of their calorie needs on the alternating feast days.

A second group followed daily calorie restriction …. consuming just 75 percent of caloric needs every day.

The last group received no intervention.

After one year, there was no significant difference in weight loss between the fasting group and the daily restriction group.

The authors say, “The results of this randomized clinical trial demonstrated that alternate-day fasting did not produce superior adherence, weight loss, weight maintenance or improvements in risk indicators for cardiovascular disease compared with daily calorie restriction.”
